Spider Christ

The street shrines of a Santa Ana Zegache, a rural settlement outside Oaxaca city, are made of cast concrete, corrugated tin sheets with corporate branding, featuring ready-mades as religious effigies. Spider Christ (2013) is part of a photographic installation series of these shrines as communal expressions of aesthetic interventions, sometimes fairly complex installations of mixed media (even using electronics and LED lights). It is Performing Pictures own homage to a completely overlooked section of non-commissioned public art, a rural equivalent to street art.
