100Hus

PROJECT:
100Hus - Express your neighboorhood!
DATE:
01.01.2009 to 01.01.2011
100Hus is a world unique, high profile innovative cultural project that incorporates the elements of art, community involvement, story-telling and sustainable development. The project is already underway and taking place in Hornstull in Stockholm where local inhabitants from 92 houses (read apartment buildings) have the opportunity to express their neighbourhoods own cultural uniqueness via five sub-projects.

The 100Hus platform is place neutral and designed to be movable to different areas to act as a framework and catalyst for exploring a specific neighbourhoods own cultural uniqueness, and a platform for new sustainable technology. The project has already received a lot of international interest from cities such as New York, London, Paris and Nairobi and has already been featured on French TV. The project is initiated and run by Mötesplats Hornstull.

Performing Pictures are collaborating with Mötesplats Hornstull on the 100Hus Art project as well as 100Hus stories, which is headed by David Herdies from Filmfront.

The 100Hus project consists of five sub-projects:

1. 100Hus Art – Local inhabitants in Hornstull get to choose one of 50 artists (constituting a mix of Sweden’s most exciting established and up and coming artists). The artist interviews the house and creates a permanent work of art on the exterior of the house that mirrors the inhabitant’s dreams, values or desires – fragments of their lives. The result is the world’s largest outdoor art gallery manifesting a local cultural identity. The quality of the work, its life length and durability as well as the whole manifestation process, is monitored and supported by 100Hus team of art specialists – with experience in managing public art installations for the city of Stockholm, Bonniers Konsthall, Magasin 3 etc. A manual and guidebook for following this process has been created by the 100Hus team creating a step by step guide for this unique process.

2. 100Hus Environment - A group of Swedish environmental technology and sustainable lifestyle companies (solar panel, wind turbine, energy effectivising inventions etc) offer sponsorship of their product to houses (read apartment blocks) in Hornstull. Each apartment block chooses a company as their preferred partner, and chooses an artist (from our catalogue of artists) to communicate the environmental effect of the technology as a permanent work of art on the exterior of their building. The environmental technology is thus communicated in an exciting, innovative and permanent way, in cooperation with the local people who have chosen it. Support for the art process is the same as described above in 100Hus Art.

3. 100Hus Stories – The local inhabitant’s stories, about their own neighbourhood are collected and recorded. Signs are placed in the area with a telephone number that can be called, giving the visiting public the opportunity to listen to a local story via mobile telephone, at the place of the stories origin, told by the person who experienced it. The stories are audio/visual and can also be accessed via internet and archived at the Stockholm City Museum. In Hornstull the stories have been recorded and edited by 12 year old pupils from the local school, and can be accessed at www.100hus.com.

4. 100Hus History – In cooperation with the Stockholm City museum local inhabitants have the opportunity to research their areas history and put it up on the internet. There is also the opportunity to place the historical facts of the area on the side of the relevant building as an information sign or a mobile phone based information hook up as in 100Hus Stories.

5. 100Hus Mutual purchase – Local inhabitants pool their purchasing power to enable them to reduce the cost of goods and services, such as electricity, cleaning, housing loans etc.
